More Steps for the Journey!

Give One, Ask Ten!

Anyone who knows me knows that the math I use must indeed be “little” in order for it to make sense to me!  That being the case I want to share a little multiplication with you.  As you know, I am committed to raising One Million Dollars for the Journey of Hope Grief Support Center, One Dollar at a Time, One Person at a Time!  What does that really look like?  Follow me here:

If 100 people would donate just one dollar a person to the Journey of Hope, that would be $100! Simple enough, right?  Well, what if each of those 100 people asked just ten of their friends to do the same – donate just one dollar? That would be an additional $1,000!  Wow! $100 just grew to $1100 in a jiffy!  Let’s keep going!  What if those new 1000 people each asked just ten of THEIR friends to donate a dollar a person and they did?  That would create an additional $10,000 bringing the grand total to $11,100!  Pretty cool, huh?  OK, let’s continue.  Suppose those new 10,000 folks each asked just ten of THEIR friends to donate just one dollar and they did, the total number of folks involved would be an additional 100,000 people and an additional $100,000 for a total of $111,100.  Hmmmm!  This is getting interesting!

Now suppose that those 100,000 new donors each asked just ten of their friends to donate just one dollar and they did, then the total number of new participants would be ONE MILLION!  And the total amount donated would be ONE MILLION DOLLARS added to the $111,100 already given!  The goal would have been exceeded!  All of this accomplished in just five generations of people, we could raise $1Million! Amazing!

All it takes is for one hundred people to commit to giving one dollar a piece and asking ten of their friends to duplicate the process of giving one and asking ten!  Think about it won’t you?

Others have pondered this possibility!  In fact, a group of Sociology classes from Plano Senior High School in Plano, TX, may undertake this project as a way to study Social Movements!  Wouldn't it be cool if a group of high school students could be the catalyst for this One in a Million Campaign!  I'll keep you posted!

 Progress and Partnerships!

Since October 2, I have logged another 120,000 steps toward my goal of running One Million steps for the Journey of Hope and the One in a Million Campaign!  That brings my total number of steps run to 858,000 leaving only 142,000 more to go!  One million steps run is the equivalent of 500 miles! I have made a pledge to donate one dollar for every mile I run . . . so at the end of this journey, I will donate a total of $500 to commemorate my running.  I'm really excited that the total is growing!

I find this journey filled with unexpected twists and surprises!  I am constantly amazed at the folks I meet on this trek who want to do something to boost the awareness of and money raised for the Journey of Hope!  Two of those folks I met on Twitter!  I mentioned them in my last two posts on this blog. Sandy Fowler and her husband Tom have graciously partnered with me to raise funds for the Journey of Hope and the One in a Million Campaign by creating a "Partner Page" associated with their DIYRunning site! They are donating a full 25% of the proceeds generated from the purchase of training audios designed to help runners of all levels and abilities run better! Simply Amazing!

Walkers Joining the Fun!

October 24 is Make a Difference Day.  You can make a difference in the lives of bereaved children by taking a walk through Plano’s Harrington Park along the Chisholm Trail.  By participating, you will help raise funds and awareness of the needs of bereaved children. 

 

Warren’s Walk is a 5K walk being held on October 24 to raise money for Journey of Hope Grief Support Center.  The walk will begin in Harrington Park, located at 401 W. 16th Street, Plano, TX.  Registration begins at 8:15 with the walk starting at 9:15 a.m.

 

Journey of Hope Grief Support Center provides support groups for children and families who are grieving the death of a loved one.  Warren’s Walk is an opportunity to support our mission and to remember and celebrate the lives of your own loved ones, as well.

Stepping Out for the Journey of Hope

Progress and Partnerships!

Well, Since August 22, I have logged another 80,000 steps toward my goal of running One Million steps for the Journey of Hope and the One in a Million Campaign!  That brings my total number of steps run to 666,000 leaving only 334,000 more to go!  One million steps run is the equivalent of 500 miles! I have made a pledge to donate one dollar for every mile I run . . . so at the end of this journey, I will donate a total of $500 to commemorate my running.  I'm really excited that the total is growing!

New Partnership with DIYRunning for the One in a Million Campaign!

Since August 3 I have run another 72,000 steps toward my goal of 1,000,000 by the end of this year to raise money and awareness for the Journey of Hope Grief Support Center!  That brings my total to 586,000 steps with only 414,000 to go by year's end! Barring unforeseen injury or illness, I should make it! Along with the 500 miles to run, I have committed to donate $500 ~ one dollar for each mile run ~ to the Journey of Hope!  That amount will be a part of what I hope will be One Million Dollars donated to the Journey of Hope, One Dollar at a Time, One Person at a Time!

Enough about me! I am excited to announce a new partnership in my efforts to meet my financial goal for the Journey of Hope!  If you've not heard of Twitter yet, I can honestly say that it is one of the most profoundly useful social media tools I've found!  I have met some amazing folks on Twitter!  One of those is a lady named Sandy Fowler!  She has so many wonderful things going on that I can hardly keep up with her! To make a long story short, he husband coaches recreational runners ~ from folks just getting started all the way to folks running marathons!  Anyway, they approached me with an extremely generous and unique idea!

Tom Fowler and DIYRunning have volunteered to donate a portion of the revenue generated through his coaching materials offered online to the Journey of Hope!  I invite you to visit two sites. One is the main DIYRunning site.  On this site, they have dedicated 10% of all revenues generated through Thanksgiving to the Journey of Hope! Cool!  On anther page created by them just for the One in a Million campaign, they have dedicated 25% of all revenues generated from this site to the Journey of Hope! Very cool!

Half My Steps Taken!

Since July 20 I have run another 48,000 steps toward my goal of 1,000,000 by the end of this year to raise money and awareness for the Journey of Hope Grief Support Center!  That brings my total to 514,000 steps with only 486,000 to go by year's end! Barring unforeseen injury or illness, I should make it! Along with the 500 miles to run, I have committed to donate $500 ~ one dollar for each mile run ~ to the Journey of Hope!  That amount will be a part of what I hope will be One Million Dollars donated to the Journey of Hope, One Dollar at a Time, One Person at a Time!

In light of the economy, I have revised my goal a bit for 2009!  I would like to raise a minimum of $50,000 by the end of this year on my way to the total of one million dollars in time.  I am not abandoning the goal of one million dollars, I am merely cutting it up into manageable bites.  People seem better able to wrap their minds around say $50,000 than a million.

Wow! Many More Miles! Many More Steps!

I've Been Away Far Too Long!

Since my last update on this blog site in March, I have logged another 384,000 steps toward my goals of running One Million Steps for the Journey of Hope!  My total is now 442,000 steps!  Only 558,000 to go!  I am promoting the One in a Million Campaign ~ a campaign that aims to raise One Million Dollars, One Dollar at a Time, One Person at a Time, In 2009 for the Journey of Hope Grief Support Center!  My personal goal connected with the running, one million steps by the way is approximately 500 miles, is to donate one dollar for each mile I run!

Updates!

I have created a group for the Journey of Hope on Face Book and invite anyone on Face Book to join the group and help the cause by donating just one dollar and then inviting others to do the same!

On Twitter, I have created a "hash tag" for the One in a Million campaign identified as #1inamillion4kids ~ so if you are active on Twitter, look me up, join in the fun and help me spread the word. On Twitter I can be found under markhundley.

I posted a birthday wish on Face Book back in June and raised over $500 for the One in a Million campaign!  It was fun watching folks donate!

So Simple, So Easy, So Difficult!

Yes, all three are true of the One in a Million campaign.  The idea is simple ~ donate just one dollar - the cost of a soda - to the Journey of Hope.  JUST ONE DOLLAR!  The formula is so easy!  Once you have donated your dollar, just ask at least 10 friends to do the same!  The idea being that as people donate and ask, we will reach one million folks each one donating just one dollar!  The Difficult part of this equation is getting folks to take the five minutes needed to complete the simple task!

Excitement is Spreading!

Word is Spreading!

I don't know about you, but when others become excited by an event in which I am deeply invested, I get PUMPED!  Well, excitement is exactly what is taking place right now related to the One in a Million campaign to raise One Million Dollars, One Dollar at a Time, One Person at a Time in 2009!

I am chair of the newly formed Advisory Council for the Journey of Hope Grief Support Center - a non-profit organization that provides free group grief support to children, adolescents and their parents or adult caregivers as they learn to mourn the death or impending death of a loved one!  The organization has served families from 47 different communities located in 11 different counties in the North Texas region!  We have been doing this consistently now for almost 11 years!

Unique Times and Unique Challenges

As with any endeavor that works to fill a needed gap in services to families and communities, economic down cycles create unique challenges.  That is why the One in a Million campaign is such a vital component of the existing and ongoing efforts by the Journey of Hope to remain viable!

This is a campaign in which anyone, from anywhere in the country at any time may participate and I invite you to take a moment to visit the Journey of Hope website at http://johgriefsupport.org to see what is happening.  Once there and after perusing the site, simply click the One in a Million link, donate one dollar (the cost of a soda on a good day) and then pass the link on to your friends, family and co-workers!  It's that simple!

My Personal Progress

Now for an update on my commitment to run 1,000,000 steps or 504 miles @ 12 miles per week between now and the end of 2009!

As of this morning -- after logging another 6,000 steps or 3 miles -- I have traveled 22,000 steps for the Journey of Hope and lack only 978,000 more to reach my million!  Remember, I'm also committing one dollar per mile to the cause as an added incentive for me to finish my goal!  That will be $504 by year's end.  I'm not sure, but I think I may have convinced a couple more runners to join in on the challenge of running/walking 1,000,000 steps for the Journey this year.

Just as in the last post, only 2,000 runners logging 500 miles gathering $500 in support pledges would generate the $1 Million for Journey of Hope.

Thus far the One in a Million campaign has generated $1050 toward the goal of $1 Million in 2009 leaving only $998,950 to be raised!  As the total increases and the deficit decreases, I will keep you posted!

Information Tidbit

Did you know that one out of seven children by the age of ten will experience the death of a loved one?  Putting that information into perspective.  Let's say we take one first grade class in one school located in one city or town.  If that first grade class has 21 students then according to the stats, 3 children in that one class will experience the death of a loved one by the age of ten.  That's just one class in one school in one town.  Now begin adding the number of first grade classes in a single elementary school, the number of elementary schools in a given district, the number of districts in a particular state and the number of states in our nation and the scope of this stat begins to clarify!

What's Next?

Yesterday's meeting generated other outstanding ideas about how to reach the Million Dollar goal!  I must begin thinking about the kind of celebration to hold when we meet our goal!  Any ideas?
